Piano Lessons or Barbecuing a Sacred Cow

Piano Lessons or Barbecuing a Sacred Cow

I have a piano teacher and I like her a lot.  She is sweet, kind, talented, and, above all, patient.  I have been playing instruments since I was ten when I got my first guitar.  I played professionally for a decade starting in my teens mostly playing cover songs in the genres of Motown, Rock n Roll, Pop and more. And now I am taking piano lessons.

I recently decided to give reading music a chance.  Most of my life I found sheet music too difficult and not useful or essential to bother with.  Both my sisters took piano lessons and their playing reminded me of typists typing in time.  So I am learning to make sense of all the dots on the lines and spaces along with the symbols interspersed throughout. I write many songs on piano all by ear and writing is passionate creation. Learning a new skill helps keep the plasticity of my brain functioning.

But I am not writing about learning to play sheet music.  I am writing about my conversation with her after my last lesson.  We found ourselves outside enjoying a moment of sun in an otherwise typical bleak Northwestern winter when the subject of hypnosis came up and she expressed an interest in the education involved along with other questions.

In our conversation, she spoke of the discipline she does every day and I am very familiar with it as I learned it decades ago.  She and I are part of a group in which we would best be described as students.

We spoke of the school’s process that involves the breath and particular mind focus.  It is said to be a powerful process for creating new understandings, brain empowerment, and manifestation in the physical world.  She is what I would call a dedicated student and works with this process daily.

As she was talking about this process, and how much she enjoys it,  I was remembering my decades of watching the students using this method to change and my observations over the years of their lives.  I believe this process works to some extent, however, many have not manifested well using it in my personal observation. For myself, I have found other processes that work as well or better for me.

As she was describing her experiences I was reminded of my personal experience of working with clients and their misunderstanding of the trance state.  The trance state is used to make changes in the subconscious mind which then manifests in the conscious mind.  It is my opinion that our “choices” made in everyday life are ninety-five percent driven by our subconscious mind, not our conscious mind.  Getting into the state she was describing as being a trance state was not a trance state because in a trance the conscious mind is “asleep” not observing.  In a trance state such as I am describing the subconscious mind is the active mind.  Hypnotherapists make use of the trance state to reprogram existing states or patterns with new states or patterns the client desires to have and experience in their lives.

I mentioned how and why the exercise of breathing and focus does not work nearly as well as a true trance state with a competent therapist. To make a change in the subconscious mind generally requires a true trance state which means that the desired change one holds in the conscious mind must be presented to the subconscious mind and must be presented in a proper manner.

This reminds me of a client from many years ago who was very interested in hypnosis.  He was so interested that he recorded his own hypnosis MP3.  He sent me a copy and I listened to it for a few minutes before I turned it off and communicated to him to not use it at all.  His misunderstanding of the science and art of hypnosis was so flawed that he was creating the very opposite of his stated desires.

I explained to my wonderful piano teacher that the likelihood of communication with the subconscious using her method was flawed for two reasons. The first reason was that generally if you are “aware” of the wonderful place you are, her experience in the void, you are mostly in your conscious mind observing. If you are in the conscious mind you are not in a true and useful trance state.  So if you truly want to communicate with the subconscious the conscious must be “asleep”.

So, the difficulty of getting information to the subconscious on your own means that as you do induce a trance state on your own, at the moment of entering the trance you have to be holding the thought, best held as a symbol, that you wish to have planted in the subconscious.  That is tricky as the mind is a linear serial process, a stream of consciousness consisting of constant thought about one thing or another, and, any of those thoughts may be the one you present and you most likely will not know what you presented. Could that thought be one of worry or fear or something else you don’t really want to present.. Well, you won’t know because you would have to be disassociated (watchful) conscious state to really know.

Now I am not saying that we humans are not powerful consciousness.  We are and we do create our reality.  However, the beliefs, limitations, fears, and other thoughts and concerns we have in our subconscious were adopted primarily in our first seven years of life.  These patterns were adopted because during that time we exist in a theta mind state, the same mind frequency while in a trance. We learn a great deal in those first seven or eight years and we learn it from our immediate environment and primarily from our social context of the family structure. The subconscious mind can be changed through the conscious mind. But it is difficult and usually takes an exceptional amount of time, energy, and focus.

We are all gods and we do create our reality.  And there are methodologies to do so.  And if you want your piano tuned to its full potential a piano you had best find someone with the experience and skill to do so skillfully.  And, of course, you can learn to tune a piano.  I am learning to do so and it has required a great deal of time and practice and I am still not up to professional standards.  If you want to change your mind or tune a piano it is much easier to find someone who is trained and practiced to do so.  Learning to do something yourself is a worthy quest, after all, you don’t still want your mom tying your shoelaces.  At its core all learning is self-learning given no one can force you to learn something against your will. Learning to read music, and tuning the piano, I am doing these things because I desire to do so.

I have a piano teacher to guide and assist me and she has the experience and the tools to do so.  There are masters in every field and there are those that aspire to mastery which is why studying with a master is best if you want to progress as rapidly as possible.  If you want to change your deeper mind, your subconscious mind, finding someone you are attuned to and trust is a way to do so rapidly.

The Subconscious and Words

The personality, the ego, is a composite of many factors including past lives, genetics, the entire social environment one incarnates into, and the choices we make with that part of our soul we know exists and is called the will. The study of the use of the will is what got me to be a thirty-year practitioner of hypnotherapy.

I have a unique advantage in using hypnotherapy because I have had a parallel interest in metaphysics going back five decades. You could say that I see the complexity underlying the problem that a client brings to me to assist in changing.

The conscious mind when it comes into conflict or disagreement with the subconscious mind almost always loses. Focusing on what you want will, over time, create reality, but it requires much more time (sometimes lifetimes) to create. Why? Because the mind wanders and at the time that the “state” is reached the symbol (words create symbols to the deeper mind) may be lost to an errant thought such as what you might want to eat.

One day around eleven o’clock in Egypt in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid I heard a young boy talking to someone and he was talking about having a cheeseburger. I knew, given the energy field of the chamber, that he would surely have a cheeseburger sooner than later. Be careful what you wish for when in such an energetic setting.

One of the great learnings I had on my journey is understanding language and the symbology of language because it is very powerful on the subconscious level. When I came across this video I had to write this post and share it with you.

New brain hypnosis connection

A study “from the University of Turku, Finland, found that during hypnosis the brain shifted to a state where individual brain regions acted more independently of each other.…The finding shows that the brain may function quite differently during hypnosis when compared to a normal waking state. This is interesting because the extent to which hypnosis modifies neural processing has been hotly debated in the field.”

This is not news to hypnotists. It is just that disconnection that is the state that allows the hypnotist to “speak” to the subconscious mind. It is a state that we encourage in what is formally known as an induction, the moving from a conscious mind dominance, to a subconscious dominance, one that allows the conscious mind to “sleep”. The deep sleep state is mostly the same as a deep trance state. Brainwaves prove this definitively.

“In a normal waking state, different brain regions share information with each other, but during hypnosis this process is kind of fractured and the various brain regions are no longer similarly synchronised,” describes researcher Henry Railo from the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Turku

I think the use of synchronised would be better replaced with dominant resonance. It is our vibration, our frequencies, that produce a dominant resonance indicated in the change from sleep to waking, from waking to sleep, and from waking to hypnotic. In deep sleep and in deep trance our conscious mind is at rest, a delta brainwave state, leaving our subconscious mind present. Much of the work that takes place in a trance occurs in a Theta brainwave state. This is one “level” higher than Delta. In either case there is access to the subconscious mind. The subconscious is a literal, powerful, and malleable mind. It is this mind where new forms of habitual thinking may be nurtured and brought into being.

It seems likely now that science will confirm what hypnotists and many others have long known — Mind is the builder and there are levels or varieties of mind.

Thoughts about Choices

My Garden

I have not posted in quite some time and I think it is time to do so. Many things change in the world and many things remain the same.

I have seen two cigarette smokers recently and its been generally unsatisfying. As medicine says to knowingly do no harm, I say respect each person’s free will. Smokers often do not want to stop smoking but due to illness and family pressures they want a therapist to make them stop. This is an interesting position for me as a hypnotherapist as it requires me to stay within the bounds of my beliefs that include helping them to understand they must want to stop if there is to be effective help given. I also only use hypnosis in the context of helping someone get results they really want.

Both smokers had very bad health due to cigarettes and both didn’t really want to stop. Their appointments had been created by family members. I bent my personal rule to see them for only one appointment to begin and I doubt either will return in spite of life threatening disease. And, it is their body to do with what they wish and I respect that.

The right and the gift of choice is a very big thing for all of us. We do create our reality on many levels and its just an experience from which we may gain wisdom. I was a smoker and I got the experience and fortunately for me I am still choosing better health.

Everyone has addictions. I have a very intuitive friend, Echo Bodine, and she wrote in her book Echos of The Soul: “Addictions on the soul’s level, can be seen as an ongoing part of the battle between the physical realm and the spiritual realm to determine which is ultimately in power.” I like that!

Time Off

I’m taking some time off. I’m in Minnesota to attend my 50th high school reunion. It was a class of 862 and over one hundred of the class are dead. I’ve heard stories of others very ill or chronically ill who can’t attend.

I’m grateful to be here and in good health even though I’m limping from and overzealous Pickle ball game. I have sprained my left calf muscle. I was having fun learning how to play but overestimated my bodies conditioning. I was warned by a close friend too.

Below are The Patricians we played music together professionally in both junior and senior high school. We have rehearsed a few songs and play them in the High School auditorium tomorrow. It’s been fun to get together. I’m so grateful to be able to do this, it is a gift.

The Patricians

One of the authors I read is Michael Newton. He is a Hypnotherapist who specializes in past life regressions focusing on the “place” and “time” between lives. I happened on an article talking about the similarities noted in 7000 people’s experiences between lives. It a good read and the website itself is one worth subscribing to.

https://www.collective-evolution.com/2018/08/22/7000-souls-recall-their-life-between-lives-during-regression-hypnosis-dolores-cannon/

One of the similarities noted is that most souls in the world today are in an early stage of development. That explains so much. I am always wondering why we the people don’t act in concert to change the priorities on this planet or why people are so clueless. And in the most sad of ways ways people are hypnotized to a narrative that they think is a result of their brilliant intellect, while all the while they are being manipulated through the very powerful tools of media, mass and social. We are glued to our devices.

We really have to break the trance we don’t realize we are in. And how does anybody become aware of being entranced, programmed.

There is a book that addresses this issue. I feel like I will have to reread  it when I return home. It’s called: Trances People Live by Steven Wolinsky.

Here is a description of the book. Read the book and get a good therapist. A therapist can help you discover the trances you are in and help change them.

“At last, the missing piece of the dysfunctional puzzle. It is not enough to understand or even relive our childhood traumas. Dr. Wolinsky shows us how we continue to recreate those traumas in our adult lives and how to stop creating them. Every uncomfortable emotional state, and many psychosomatic symptoms, are also states of trance. Trance is the “glue” that holds the problem in the present moment. Learning to identify the kind of trance state beneath a problem or symptom gives us the tool that finally dissolves the glue. This book offers a gold-mine of resources for those who suffer from dysfunctional patterns of behavior or for anyone who feels stuck in an undesirable emotional or addictive state. Learning to step out of the trance states that create our problems and symptoms is to learn to step into the present moment at last free of the baggage from our past.”

And now a few words from Milton Erickson:

“A patient comes to you because he can’t do the things he thinks he should be able do. The hypnotherapist is helping the patient transcend their learned limitations in order to realize their potentials.

That is the only legitimate basis of prestige. We naturally confer prestige on those who help us transcend our own limitations.

Magic is essentially understanding how the mind works and facilitating its potential is white magic;  using that understanding for harmful intent is black magic.”

I realize from her questions I hear from people just how often hypnosis is so misunderstood. It seems to me that it’s all about helping. Transcending our own limitations is about beneficial new patterns of thoughts and actions. The goal is positive thoughts and desires.
